New Haven, CT (6/22/21) – The John B. Pierce Laboratory has announced it will be opening a new incubator for Connecticut bioscience startups in downtown New Haven this October. The New Haven Innovation Lab’s 7630 square-foot facility will help bridge the urgent demand for lab space and incubator services from Connecticut’s rapidly growing bioscience sector.
Located inside The John B. Pierce Laboratory building at 290 Congress Avenue in New Haven, in the middle of the Yale University School of Medicine, the space will include a mix of private and shared wet labs and offices. The space is designed to facilitate collaboration among scientists and entrepreneurs at the earliest stages of discovery and growth.
The vision for the New Haven Innovation Labs was driven by The John B. Pierce Laboratory’s desire to provide Connecticut’s bioscience community with commercial-grade lab space, offices, and incubator services. Launching this year, the New Haven Innovation Labs will support current startups seeking space, along with existing established groups.
“This additional direction for the John B. Pierce Laboratory blends nicely with the longstanding commitment to design, develop and implement new technologies and innovations for the betterment of mankind,” said John Geibel, M.D.,D.Sc.,MSc., AGAF,FRSM Director Pierce Laboratory. “We are very excited to create a novel space that can support startup companies that arise from the Yale University School of Medicine community along with other startups looking to create a footprint in New Haven and Connecticut.”
“The facility will be fully outfitted and ready for companies to move in and get right to work,” said Vincent Pieribone, Ph.D., Pierce Laboratory Fellow and Director Emeritus. “New Haven Innovation Labs is a short walk to downtown shops and restaurants, as well as to the New Haven train station. Tenants will have access to the scientists within the Pierce Laboratory, giving them additional chances for discussions and allowing for cross-fertilization with both junior and senior PIs.”
To bring the project to life, the Pierce team partnered with BioCT, whose successful wet lab incubator, The BioCT Innovation Commons in Groton, made them the ideal choice to help create and manage the incubator.
“The bio industry is growing rapidly in Connecticut, thanks in large part to the innovations coming out of Yale and startup success in New Haven and the surrounding area,” said Dawn Hocevar, President and CEO of BioCT. The number-one need is and has been infrastructure/lab space to support all the phases of growth from startup to graduation. Now, thanks to the John B. Pierce Laboratory, the New Haven Innovation Labs will be an important bridge for startup space in New Haven.”
The New Haven Innovation Lab is made possible by a private investment from The John B. Pierce Laboratory and a grant from CTNext, the State of Connecticut’s resource for entrepreneurship and innovation, through the New Haven Innovation Collaborative (NHIC), one of four Innovation Places programs supported by CTNext. NHIC stewards the local impact of state investment in New Haven’s innovation and entrepreneurship economies.
“With hundreds of jobs added in the past few years, bioscience/biotech companies like Alexion and Arvinas are demonstrating the economic impact of Yale’s growing research innovation pipeline,” said Michael Harris, Executive Director, New Haven Innovation Collaborative. “CTNext’s support for this new lab incubator creates a local first step for their next generation of companies. In addition, a talent partnership with Southern Connecticut State University’s BioPath program will help them connect with a locally based workforce and provide pathways for more New Haven residents to access these bioscience jobs.”
